奈良縣の南東部に位置し、北部及び東部は奈良縣上北山村、西部は奈良縣十津川村、南部は和歌山縣北山村、東南部は三重縣熊野市に接しています。
四方を山に圍まれ、西部には釋迦ヶ嶽をはじめとする大峯山系が連なり、修驗の聖地である大峯奧駈道は「紀伊山地の靈場と參詣道」として、ユネスコの世界遺産に登録され、村の約半分が吉野熊野國立公園のエリアです。
また、下北山村にある「池原ダム湖」「七色ダム湖」は、ブラックバスフィッシングの聖地として知られ評價も高く、全國のアングラー（釣り人）に愛されています。
きなりの郷の「きなり」とは、「まじり氣がない」、「純粹な」という意味です。

Shimokitayama Village is located in the southeast of Nara Prefecture and is bordered on the north by Kamikitayama Village, west by Totsukawa Village, south by Kitayama Village and east by Kumano City. It is surrounded by mountains with Mt. Shakagatake to the west.

“Kinari no Sato” is another name of Shimokitayama Village, and “kinari” means “genuine” and “pure”.
