起源は鎌倉時代。主として佛師が彫刻、漆藝を手がけ、注文に應じた仕事をしてきたが、明治元年「神佛混淆禁止令」を機に日常生活に供する漆器の生産に轉じた。木地材として桂、朴を用いる。彫刻を施した後、蒔さび、下地付け、下地研ぎといった堅牢な處理を行い、朱塗り、堆烏塗り仕上げなどを行う。

This began in the 13th century, when designated craftsmen carved and lacquered items for buddhist templess. The characteristics of Kamakura-bori are that the carving is executed directly on the wooden objects prior to lacquering. In order to attain its classic appearance, they apply lacquer with some special material on the carved surface to achieve the shades of profound color.
