1600年、黒田長政の筑前入國に伴って職人が集められ、素燒き人形が生まれたのが起源とされている。江戸後期に名工たちが活躍して全國に流通するようになった。明治時代に入ると寫實的な意匠が取り入れられ、今日に至っている。工程は、原型、型取り、素地作り、燒成、彩色の順番で行われる。

Hakata-ningyo is said to have originated in 1600, when Kuroda Nagamasa, the leader of the Fukuda clan, arrived at Chikuzen and gathered artisans to his domain. Those artisans began making bisque-fired clay dolls. In the late Edo period, quality dolls were made by skilled craftsmen, and Hakata dolls were marketed throughout the country. A plaster mold is made from the original clay mold, and the bodies are then cast, fired, and the face and clothes are meticulously painted.
