奈良墨は、奈良縣奈良市において生産されている墨です。明日香の地で始まったとされ、都が京都へ移ってからも奈良には多くの社寺があることから、寫經や學問に必要な墨の工房は奈良に留まりました。奈良縣奈良市にある興福寺二諦坊の燈明の煤を集めて作ったとされている油煙墨が、良質な「奈良墨」として名聲を得て以降、現在まで長い傳統を保持しています。

Nara ink was created in the city of Nara, Nara Prefecture. It is thought to have originated in the village of Asuka. Even after the capital of Japan shifted from Nara to Kyoto, because Nara has so many temples and shrines, ink producers pooled in the area to create ink required for copying sutras and scholarly endeavors. Lamp soot ink created from soot of the eternal flame at Kofuku-ji Temple became known as high-quality Nara ink, and the product has developed a long tradition to this day.
