鹿兒島成（なり）の流れをくむ大弓で、江戸時代後期には盛んに作られていたことが記録に殘っています。明治時代に入り、川内地區から來住した楠見親子が多くの弓作りの職人を養成しました。豐富な原材料に惠まれたこともあって、昭和初期には、東アジアにまで製品が賣られるような大産地になりました。現在でもわが國で唯一の産地として竹弓の9割を生産しています。

Mid-19th century documents indicate that the production of Miyakonojo bows was already a thriving local craft at the time. By the end of the century, a number of bowmakers had been instructed in the craft by two generations of the Kusumi family, who resided in the area. Blessed with an abundant local supply of raw materials, the craft continued to develop, and by the 1920s, bows were being sold across East Asia.Miyakonojo is now the country's only production center for bows, accounting for 90% of all bamboo bows produced globally.
