起源は明らかでないが、「延喜式」にその記述があることから、石見地方において 1000年以上前から紙漉きの技術があったものと考えられる。煮熟、叩解、抄紙、乾燥といった主要工程はすべて手で、きめ細かく強靭で、その上品格があり作長期保存に堪える特性をもつ。

Although the origin of Sekishu-washi, is not clear, the 10th-century　ENGISHIKI (a collection on official procedures and ceremonies) mentions papermaking in this region. The basic process of molding paper is all done by hand: preparation of raw materials (steaming, soaking, cooking, etc.), beating fibers to further loosen and separate them, molding, and drying. Sekishu-washi is noted for its strength, smoothness, and durability.
