羽越地域の山間部に育成するシナノキ、オオバボダイジュまたはノジリボダイジュの樹皮から取れる靭皮（じんぴ）纖維で絲を作り、布状に織り上げたもの。繩文や彌生時代から衣裳や裝飾品などに利用され、長く着流しや農作業等の仕事着として利用されるとともに、漁網、漉し布、敷布や收納袋としても流通していました。今日では帶地やバッグ、帽子等多くの日用品にも加工されています。

Shinafu has been woven in Uetsu region since the Jomon (ca.1 O,OOOB.C.-400B.C.)and Yayoi(ca.400B.C.-300A.C.) periods.The cloth is woven with linden bark fiber, which is pared away from various types of linden trees growing in the mountains of this region. Men's casual kimonos and work clothes were made with this fabric as well as fishing nets,filters,bed sheets,and sacks.
Today,it is also made into items of daily use including obi,handbags,and hats.
