古代から常陸國では織物が織られていましたが、室町末期に結城紬の名稱が生まれ、19世紀に入って現在の技法が完成しました。今日でもたて絲、よこ絲とも眞綿の手つむぎ絲を使い、獨自の地機で織る日本の代表的な手織紬です。

Silk-raising and weaving flourished in this region since early times, and in the 19th century, the present techniques were perfected. Silk spun from textured floss was woven on what is now the oldest loom called ji-bata. With this loom, a weaver places a warp thread around his body to control the tension while weaving. A method which requires a lot of skill to perform Yuki-tsumugi is counted as one of the most distinctive pongees in Japan.
