大堀相馬燒は江戸時代初期（1690年）に作り始められたと言われています。當時その地方を治めていた相馬藩が、燒き物作りを保護、育成したため、江戸時代末期には100餘りの窯元が竝ぶ、東北地方で一番大きな産地になりました。

History indicates that the origins of Obori Soma Yaki go back to the end of the 17th century.
The kilns flourished under the patronage and protection of the local Soma clan, and by mid-19th century, there were more than 100 people at work, making it the largest production center in the Tohoku region of northern Japan.
