薩摩燒は、文祿・慶長の役の頃、當時の藩主島津氏が朝鮮から連れ歸った李朝の陶工たちによってはじめられました。
以來400年以上に及ぶ長い歴史の中で、薩摩燒は鹿兒島の豐かな風土に育まれるとともに、陶工たちの弛まぬ努力によって獨自の發展をとげ、堅野系、龍門司系、苗代川系という異なる作風の系統を生みだし今に傳えています。

The origins of Satsuma Yaki date back to the 16th century when the local feudal lord, Shimazu, returned from the Korean peninsula with some potters.
Over the next 400 years, the wonderful surroundings of Kagoshima and the tireless efforts of local potters led to a number of original developments, giving rise to various styles that are still produced today.
