西陣という名は、室町時代の應仁の亂の時、西軍が本陣とした場所に、亂の後、職人が集まって織物をしたことから付けられました。織物の歴史としては、平安時代以前に秦氏によってもたらされた織技術にまで遡ることができます。

Nishijin-ori is one of the most famous weaves of high quality. Obi sash and kimono decorated with gold and silver threads are outstanding. Specialists who immigrated from the Asian Continent introduced the sericulture and silk weaving around Kyoto in the 5th and the 6th century.
