慶長年間（16世紀末）朝鮮人陶工によって開窯され、その後平戸藩御用窯として榮えた。良質の天草陶石にコバルト色の呉須下繪を染付けた磁氣で、中でも唐風俗の童兒數人が遊ぶ樣子を描いた「唐子繪」は有名。

Mikawachi-yaki, which was initiated by potters brought in from Korea at the end of the 16th century, is largely known for its exquisite blue-and-white sometsuke in gosu (natural cobalt). The most typical design is "karako" or children in Chinese costumes. Mikawachi-yaki flourished under the patronage of the Hirato clan, and was produced as gifts to emperors and shoguns. This tradition of refined porcelain production has been handed down to the present generaion.
