書をたしなむ人にとって「文房四寶」と呼ばれ、大切な道具の一つが硯(すずり)。
赤間硯の原材料となる赤間石は材質が硬く、緻密で、石眼や美しい文樣があり、しかも粘りがあるため細工がしやすく、硯石として優れた條件を持っています。赤間硯は鎌倉時代の初めに、鶴岡八幡宮に奉納されたという記録があります。豪華な裝飾が施された高級品として名高く、江戸時代中期には各地で賣り廣められました。

Records show that Akama inkstones were offered at the Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura at the beginning of the Kamakura era (1185-1333), and by the middle of the Edo era (1600-1868) these inkstones were being sold all over the country.
Akama inkstones are characterized by their high density, hardness, and viscosity, which helps to produce high-quality ink of excellent color and luster.
