本州最北端のマグロ一本釣りの町として知られる青森縣大間町は津輕海峽に面した好漁場に位置している。近海沖では8月から12月頃までマグロ漁の最盛期となり、荒波の中で漁師は命を懸けて出漁する。豐洲市場で行われる正月初競りでは一番マグロに當たると數千萬圓から數億圓という高値が付き、一攫千金を狙う漁師達の夢の舞臺となっている。延繩漁は、餌は主に生きイカやサバを100匹以上使い、エサ釣りへの出港からマグロ漁を終え歸港するまで約17～20時間、ほぼ不眠で行う過酷な漁法。海の王者クロマグロを追い求め、愛船 晴芳丸と共に海へ繰り出す凄腕漁師 南兄弟のマグロ漁に密着。

古代から山海の惠みを食べてきた島國の日本人は、魚に敬意を表し、嚴しい自然とその命、神樣に感謝して狩獵を行っています。その歴史を代々受け繼ぎ、日本人が誠實で優しい所以はここにあるとも云えます。
日本列島の南、南西諸島周邊で産卵されると云われるマグロの王樣クロマグロ（本マグロ）は、黒潮（日本海流）や對馬海流にのって日本沿岸をエサを食べながら北上回遊する。秋から冬にかけて津輕海峽や北海道周邊まで移動するため、日本海と太平洋が繋がり、親潮やリマン海流といった寒流と暖流が交わる潮目が近いこともあり、津輕海峽沖で捕獲されるクロマグロは脂のりが最も良好で、トロが多さが最大の特徴となっている。
國内では年の瀬12月になると本州最北端 大間港で水揚げされたクロマグロは豐洲市場でも高級品として知られている。さらに大間の近海まぐろは、水揚げ時のマグロの適切な處理（血拔き、内臟除去、冷却）を行うことにより、生魚特有の臭味や鮮度保持が高く評價されている。
